A seasoned healthcare executive, Mr. Gonzalez has been working for over 35 years leading major university/teaching hospitals to preeminence. Rising to CEO, he transformed traditional institutions into exemplary integrated systems that now serve broad markets in a cost-effective manner. Mr. Gonzalez is an innovative leader who designs futures and makes them happen through extensive staff and physician participation, in-depth industry knowledge, and resourcefulness. He is committed to service excellence and powerful workforce cultures.
Mr. Gonzalez became President of Butterworth Hospital, Grand Rapids, MI in 1985. Through mergers and acquisitions, he reengineered Butterworth into Spectrum Health Systems with two major tertiary hospitals, two rural hospitals, an HMO, and provider of services at more than one hundred sites with over 10,000 employees and a medical staff of 1,100.
A graduate of Rutgers University, Mr. Gonzalez worked as a surgical technician in the US Army before earning an MBA from Cornell University and an MPA from New York University. He has served on the faculties of the University of California – Irvine, Michigan State University, and Loyola University (Chicago).
Mr. Gonzalez has published numerous papers and has been invited to speak at many conferences. He is a Fellow, Site Visitor, and Accreditation Consultant for the Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Management Education. He also served as a Regent for the American College of Healthcare Executives.
